Totally original, nonconforming gallery-edition 3LP boxset created out of nowhere from a group of French anarchist punks squatting in a disused hospital on the outskirts of Paris.  YES.  It feels almost deliberate that this one remains truly overlooked, maybe it’s the unpronounceable name Achwghâ Ney Wodei, the fact that each copy looks completely different or being the victim of a very wrong discogs categorisation (indie rock it is not!).  Regardless, it feels that more people should be aware of this.  Released in 1987 by the Bourbonese Qualk related New International Recordings label, the project was absurd, expensive and logistically complicated - where the artists set out 10x10 LP boxes to make up large canvases, which were then painted on as part of a larger artwork.  The boxes were then carved up in front of the audience members who chose their favourite part to take home with them, whilst the group played live in the background.  Brilliant, but also the sort of activity that would make any self-respecting, cost conscious label owner shudder.  Musically, the group shape-shift between eccentric French chanson, to stately art-song, brief instrumentental vignettes and minimalistic organ pieces that recall Pascal Comelade or the adventurous spirit of Aksak Maboul or even Ptôse.  In my opinion of the best intrepid records of the 1980’s still totally unnoticed.. (NM/NM - 3LP boxset with postcards).
