JD J is the moniker of Jaba, a longtime Tbilisi resident, Mutant Radio host (Out Of Whack), part-owner of the city’s only record store (Vodkast Records) and veteran at clubbing institutions Bassiai and Reflector in Kutaisi. We’ve had the true pleasure of witnessing Jaba play on a few occasions, and despite his extremely humble and gentle demeanour is something of a wild animal behind the decks.
It’s an absolute masterclass in maximalist, genre-traversing musical montage, anchored mainly by thudding industrial drums yet taking wild tangents into frantic free jazz solos, frazzled electronics and rugged sheet noise. Genuinely terrifying in parts, J’s takes on the spirit of a man possessed, unafraid to venture to full-scale freak-outs and mysterious middle-eastern trips. Few can execute such a deranged and committed method of arranging music.. Chicago madman Traxx perhaps? Maybe a handful of others, but for now let’s bear witness to one of the most exciting and most unsung DJs in Europe. BRAIN ZAPPPED!!! (Mint / New - with DL)
