Young Parisian DIY artist and flea-market record diviner Tom Val laces together a labyrinthine web of deep French folk, field recordings and avant-oddities for in-house mixtape series Tabi Tapes.
Despite clocking in at ridiculously ripe age of 22 years old, Tom Val aka Orion and his exceptional Les Disques Omnison press continues to bloom into one of the most intrepid and highly coveted outposts for new European fringe music. His bewildering 90 minute sequence here offers an insight into the musical foundations of his current activities, displaying a very old head on young shoulders and delving fearlessly into the vast canon of his home country’s experimental musical heritage.
It traces a path of regional traditional music, floating between delicate, fragile Breton folk to Medieval instrumentals and the Occitan polyphonies of the south, interspersed with discreet field-recordings and snippets of the hallucinogenic harmonic lyre of Pierre Jean Croset. The B-side journey home offers a gutsier run through strange inflections of avant-jazz, amateur / bombed-out electronics, forgotten outsider classical LPs and obscure university productions all heavily contrasting yet complimenting one another. It really feels like it could take a lifetime to collect and arrange this music, yet Tom Val has seemingly managed it before graduating university. A humbling and otherworldly glimpse into the other side of underneath. (Mint / New - with DL)
