Perhaps it the fact that Time has now completely dilated, or perhaps it’s just because it’s pretty much perfect but, the Sprigs debut CD-R already feels like a modern classic. So much so, that it makes total sense the it’s already getting the deluxe reissue treatment complete with previously unreleased tracks. It’s a Beautifully scrappy meeting point between diaristic real-world clatter and a particular strain of folk-pop romanticism. The collaged structure, the folk/indie/synth/noise blueprint and the hermetic world-building recall the whole Enhet för Fri Musik / Monokultur thing or some of the sweeter stuff on Xpressway. But the scuffed up stoned diffidence and the ramshackle embarrassed sincerity lend it a particularly British, possibly even South London specific aesthetic. The diy pastoral Wind in the Willows cover, the beautifully lazy combinations of sketchy guitar, Tascam hiss and Casio meander, and the church hall socialism all speak to me on a deep level. And, as spring struggles to begin again this music this blurry but hopeful sounds just right... (mint / new, w/ free download) - shops pls get in touch for wholesale.
