Back in print! Surreal, otherworldly minimalist works concocted by Portuguese artist Nuno Canavarro in the late 1980’s and seemingly overlooked (the cover gives nothing away) until Jim O’Rourke gave a second life via his Moikai imprint. Plux Quba is a total head-scratcher, a prime number record in the sense that it’s roots can’t be traced back to anything other than itself. A dream-laced assemblage of scraps and pieces of samples, electronics and instrumentation, Canavarro predates any of what would later become glitch (snd, Oval and the Mille Plateux label) by at least 10 years by weaving an enigmatic, melodic, gentle yet entirely foreign sound-world out of the simplest of brush strokes. It’s masterful use of space allows the imagination to run wild, tracks are untitled and there are moments of extreme quiet or silence where we can allow our brains to fill in the gaps. One of the great musical enigmas of the pre-internet age and stamped with the highest recommendation for anyone with an interest for anything on this website.. (NM)
