Hallucinatory weltschmerz from Brannten Schnüre - one of their earliest and most lusted after releases back in print.
When this one came out in 2017, we’d never heard anything like it. Along with being the record that really made us take notice of the excellent Vrystaete label, It felt like another world of elasticated European history that melted into a nostalgic dream space. It still feels like that now, with its surrealist potency only increasing over time. Here, the duo (Christian Schoppik & Katie Rich) really sweat the samples out and take on a heavy collaged approach, stretching them out, looping, contorting and carving to reveal their inner-most psychedelic qualities. There’s no shortage of praise for Brannten Schnüre’s work here or anywhere else, but it’s hard to deny Muschelsammlung as one of the great experimental albums of the last 10 years. Very glad this one is back in circulation. (Mint / New).
