Another regression back into the musky memories of Europe old from Brannten Schnüre - their short-run 2014 debut cassette Aprilnacht finally finding its way out on vinyl via Aguirre.

Ten years ago the Schnüre we know now was the sole project of Christian Schoppik (also Lauten Der Seel), before the plainly spoken vocals of Katie Rich would be introduced.  Schoppik’s slowly unfurling sound assemblages dowse the fragmented myths and folklore of times gone by on the continent.  Like a Sebaldian journey, the story here slowly develops to form a sepia-toned picture of collective European memory.  Strings are stretched out, vocal chants are distorted and the phonographic crackle of ghosts in the dust is ever present.  The subtly shamanic, hallucinogenic opener basks heavy in the influence of the late Ghédalia Tazartès, referencing a mysterious pagan / nomadic past-life relapse.  But for all it’s mildew-coated bad-dream aura, there are breaks in the fog that reveals the soft fragility that underpins the best moments of Brannten Schnüre.  The lullaby-like Requiem Für Ein Schwalbennest or closer Afra Altar Maidbronx stripping everything back to soft strings and inviting you in.  A key piece to the puzzle of one of the consistently excellent experimental projects of the past ten years.  (Mint / New)
