Thomas Bush’ cult imprint Men Scryfa mobilises out of nowhere like a mysterious sleeper cell with a mesmerising suite of Buchla synth studies from Zaheer Gulamhusein (also XVARR)
So far a label that hasn’t missed - Thomas Bush’s Old & Red, John T Gast and Merula, three releases we’ll never tire of and All I Knew feels every inch the same. It mines into Gulamhusein’s long-held fascination with esoterica, the occult and left hand path traditions. Through a groggy batch of undulating drone pieces, Zaheer holds your stare, each subtly infused with the cosmic traditions of the asian subcontinent, traces of Sufi mysticism and a hefty dose of influence from England’s hidden reverse. As a personal aside, my earliest memory of Zaheer was discussing Vagina Dentata Organ’s music in the Manchester NTS studio back in 2016, which hopefully goes so way to explain the path that’s led him to this focused expanse of cosmic music. Dark yet not downtrodden and not a sick of nag champa in sight. Best to let this marinate, it’ll get better with age. (Mint / New)
Zaheer Gulamhusein is a Leicester-based musician and lifelong student of esotericism, with previous releases appearing under the aliases XVARR, WASWAAS, among others. Men Scryfa is a project initiated by Thomas Bush surveying the effects of geological stimulus. The earth asserts itself once more.
