Too good to be true home-cooked sunshine indie / art pop from Glasgow’s Ike Goldman.
Ike first came to our attention on that recent Hood Faire compilation of early teenage experiments. Their contribution (apparently their first ever song) was a muffled, slightly awkward piece of chorus-heavy guitar and introverted vocal that perfectly encapsulated the embryonic days of home-recording - feeling over form. Fast forward a few weeks later and Ike calls in the shop with a box of tapes that haven’t garnered much interest anywhere. This self-released cassette - For Your Entertainment, Pleasure - shows Ike’s musical abilities have bloomed since that first dabble with their dodgy Tascam, but that same essence of smothered optimism is present.
Ike’s songs are now fully formed and instantly memorable, anchored always to hammered piano chords and cascading vocal choir harmonies. It’s upbeat yet yearning for something, capturing late summer moods spent in Brighton. We’re reminded instantly of the recent uncovering of Malmo’s Sternpost, who’s similarly accomplished cottage-industry art-song proved that there’s more to DIY music than micing up a microwave and turning the gain up to 11.
