The out-of-time Ur-text of 60s/80s indie appears from nowhere via Concentric Circles.

If you start at Lou Reed’s rambling intro at the start of Live 69 and then slowly zoom out. First you come to the Modern Lovers, then The Shoes, then Dolly Mixture, The Pastels, The TVPs, The Clean, Strawberry Switchblade, Tallulah Gosh, Beat Happening, Look Blue Go Purple, Black Tambourine, Garbage and the Flowers, Barabara Manning, The Aislers Set, Comet Gain, Grass Widow, Liechtenstein, Cindy etc etc. And then stop when you reach someone about to hit a lone snare drum covered with a dish cloth somewhere at this precise moment in an apartment they can’t afford in San Francisco. Then if you track back, pan right and zoom in looking for the finest most perfect point in this particular field of human endeavour, you might, most probably, land here. And in all the years of fetishising this particular combination of tape hiss, Byrds guitar, everyday boy/girl vocals and snare + tambourine + cardboard box drums, it’s very strange that no one else has been here. Did Moon Love release anything at the time? Certainly if they did, I, who has spent a fair amount of my life as a student of this stuff has never heard it… But, luckily for us, the sage Jed Binderman of Freedom to Spend and Concentric Circles has. If you have got through the list of bands above (like a flyer for a club night even I probably wouldn’t want to go to!) without sighing and turning away then this is the stuff of dreams. It’s an almost perfect version of a perfect idea executed with total commitment and a serious gift for melody. Duffle coat on!  (Mint / New)
