Gyeongsu and June join forces on Parisian imprint Deardogs with a stellar 4-tracker of bittersweet indie pop. 4 tracks, 4 hits, pressed on a great sounding record, recalling the beloved format of indie EP's that used to get released on labels like Sarah Record, Shinkansen or 4AD. Led by a light and sultry voice that recalls Trembling Blue Star, Broadcast, Scala, The Cranberries.
There's a strong sense of hard work emanating from this record, a collective effort to push every aspect of the indie sound coming out of this Paris scene further: in terms of recording techniques, arrangements and songwriting. A bittersweet colour taints all four songs, but each offer different shades of that same feeling: the jolliness of "Scarlet" is quickly balanced by a highly melancholic "Faces" and the long, eerie introduction of "Lead to Curse".
It might be a short record, but the music is so generous, so bright, that it feels like every inch of wax has been used rightfully. Some of the very best indie coming from France I can think of.
