Japanese store / label Art Into Life continue their relationship and excavation duties with the mythical Parisian artist, blurring the boundaries between new and old with Vhoysee. It’s hard to really tell, Gillis’ enigmatic work has a time-vacuum sense to it, where trends and most probably the entire outside world are completely ignored in favour of impulsive home-brewed experiments. Some pieces are reportedly stripped from her earliest demo tape (Angebiguë - edition of 10, given to friends only, etc) and are quite mutant sounding cold wave pieces imbued in her outsider aura. The collage of coarse tape manipulation / percussion and atonal noise, offset with floating French vocals makes for an interesting textual clash. There’s elements of Parmegiani’s sound creation, Tazartès uncompromising recording techniques or the primitive electronic expression of Fondation, whilst the dazed ’n drugged slurry-like downtempo of closing duo Cinolm and Il Vous Reste wouldn’t be out of place on the dance floor of Salon in a Tolouse Low Trax / Vladimir Ivkovic DJ set. Fierce works from a vital and still very relevant lynchpin of the DIY underground. (Mint / New - with DL).
