A floating, melancholic ambient classic ‘Reality In Love’ feels almost too perfect to be true. Toshifumi Hinata is best known for his soundtrack work, and there is something here that brings images straight from Moebius or Miyazaki to mind. But, while this record certainly works with a palette that would fit a commercial film score – Satie-ish piano, lush strings and glacial synths – it never strays into empty sentiment and exists firmly in its own world, just beyond genre. Mixing pure modern-classical romance with a kind of zoned-out drift and the merest hint of unease, It never puts a foot wrong.
