Fresh takes on cottage industry genre-blurring from promising new US label Outside Time.
Nate Scheible is a new name to us but one that is obviously very active within the ever-expanding world of ambient music. On Or Valleys And, Nate expands the horizons of his textural and stylistic palette into a restless flurry of activity that explores details in micro / macro focus. Slap bang in the middle is the 7-part movement of ‘Stray’ - an intense blast of short improv pieces that segue into eyelid flicker electronics, plush piano chords and atmospheric found sound, working nicely like an experimental selection box for those with short attention spans. More dilated is the crumpled, glitch-riddled ‘Outlined In’ or lingering, pensive piano notes of ‘The Silver Shore’ that recalls Harold Budd or Robert Haigh’s solo pieces. But it’s the disruption of form that gets us, complexity in miniature and simplicity is elongated, whilst the hilarious text-sound piece ‘missississippi’ plonked right within because, why not?
