It's no secret whatsoever that love and admiration for Peacefrog's extensive back cat runs deep round these parts. Here we find respected NYC house producer Wayne Gardner acting under his own name with his '97 debut EP Project 27, laying out four cuts of equal high quality, with plenty of nods to the classic garage house sound honed through Classic Man / Logic output. First up, the bass line on 'To Be Free Again' gives anythin Kerri Chandler did a run for his money, backed by skipping drums, lush pads and sweeping, phased synth washes whereas 'Spank It' is much more direct in its modus operandi, pumping HARD for maximum impact. Gardiner revisits his immortalised 'Rapid Winds' track originally stuck out on Nervous in '93 with a fresher take thats more spluttery than the direct kill of the OG, but equally unmatched in its breezy, no-fucks-given deep house pomp. Is that all? ermm..No! The Dan Curtain remix on here is highlight for me, all jazz brush drums and soaring strings, finding that fabled sweet spot between beautifully uplifting yet somewhat nostalgic / melancholic owed to Curtain's Detroit credentials.
