Timeless and sublime works of pure acoustic minimalism via the cult French Shandar label in 1976 from composer duo Vincent Le Masne and Bertrand Porquet. Chantal D'Arcy’s legendary Shandar label spent much of the 70’s championing the emergent US minimal scene over in Europe, releasing seminal works from Terry Riley (Persian Surgery Dervishes), Charlemagne Palestine (Strumming Music), La Monte Young’s Dream House and more from the likes of Steve Reich, Pandit Pran Nath and Philip Glass. Guitares Dérive takes obvious influence from the school of American minimalism but spins it into fluid, dream-laced, lyrical flurry of stripped-back acoustic guitar interplay. The duo’s virtuosity is staggering, each drifting between gently intoxicating passages of string dervishes whilst never falling into any repetitive or systems-based structure. It’s fair to say some other releases on the label, whilst no less influential and brilliant, fall into tougher or more academic realms (Ragnar Grippe / Tusques), but it’s brilliant to hear how early ideas of minimalism could be utilised in a more poetic and subtly euphoric way. Perfect music to dream too.. (VG+/VG+)
