Back again - surely for the last time? OUR ANTHEMS, the joint project of Scott Foust and Karla Forecky (ov Idea Fire Company / Swill Radio) and Mike Popovich as The Pickle Factory.

Much like the eponymous brine-cured food item, it’s a record that continues to better with age. One of those we pull out every few months and unanimously all agree is excellent and has unfairly remained well under most people’s radars since its 2010 release. It rolls out as 12 succinct, inventive yet cooly retrained instrumental vignettes, each unique with their own charm and subtly anthemic qualities. The stripped-bare / dub-wise sound of golden-era UK post punk feels like a heavy inspiration - Dome / P’o, etc - in-fact opener Siege Engine wouldn’t sound out of place on the A.C Marias LP, whilst ‘Monument’ employs a sloww strafing bassline against quivering synths for a loungier effect. All subtly weird without overdoing it. Borecky’s plaintive vocals calls on Whorl plunge us down to the deepest point on the LP, recalling some deeply zoned of Motion Sickness Of Time Travel, coming up for air on the shimmering, almost uplifting a-side closer Compass. Just so, so good. Not got many! (Mint / New - deadstock)
