Ambush! Manchester’s Sferic label comes out of nowhere with this commemorative 10” EP celebrating its 10th release by handing the honours to close cohorts Space Afrika. The release sees the Northern duo collaborating with Manchester visual artist, poet and filmmaker Tibyan Mahawah Sanoh, taking musical elements from the 2020 debuted film of the same name ‘Untitled (To Describe You) [OST]’. The film works to illustrate the Black experience of growing up in the North of the UK, addressing the issue of identity, ancestry and personal relationships using a deeply personal collage of imagery and sound to highlight a starkly honest, intimate and often vulnerable picture. Musically, both Joshes’ work here feels like the natural progression from their acclaimed ‘hybtwibt?’ mixtape, adapting a montaged approach of spoken word, disorientating field recordings and their trademark dub atmospherics, intertwined with Tibyan’s deeply personal poetry. Harsh cuts instil a sense of dream-like time distortion - moving between distant vocal calls, to the thumping, ecstatic pulse of what could be any night-club, into faded recordings from what sounds like an gospel church and the everyday traffic sounds captured in West Africa. It’s asking more questions than answers - mapping out the highs, lows, melancholic and memorable in a way that feels like a rare glimpse into the innermost sanctuary of people’s lives. Jaw-droppingly, heart-wrenchingly and effortlessly beautiful - all bias aside, best of 2021?? (Mint / New - gold Pantone print)
