More gold mined from the vaults of Italian minimal lynchpin Roberto Donnini via his Lynx Records private press. The second in the two-part ‘Tunedless’ series released in 1987 sees Donnini expand upon his systems-based composition, which involves key members of the Italian avant-underground and performing arts scene (Arturo Stalteri, Daniele Lombardi, Andrea Centazzo ++) improvising along to a pre-set computerised click-track without hearing the other musicians. Its a unique combination of contemporary classical, infused with the inspiration of America’s first-wave school of minimalism and forward-thinking avant-garde ideas steeped in the history of Italian renaissance owed to its Florentine roots. The effects are like a waking dream collage with no obvious beginning or end, flutters of prepared piano strings dance around operatic calls, soft tuba notes bubble underneath whilst the repeating, trance-inducing electronic sounds coalesce with acoustic sound occasionally producing unusual and unexpected harmonies.Donnini’s use of emergent technology electronics with centuries old classical instrumentation could be seen as a way to project the Italian avant-garde into the future, as he said ‘we really thought minimalism would change the world’.. and I guess he was right in some ways.A truly remarkable, entirely unique and often jaw-droppingly beautiful moment within the vast canon of minimalism with infinite subtletiesthat’d take a lifetime to unravel..
