Spanish duo Miradasvacas hold séance on this new one on South Of The North, emboldened and clearly invigorated by the widen sonic possibilities of their new recording studio in Madrid.  Both Pablo Mirón and Juan Vacas in our eyes are becoming the torch carriers for a new kind of broken music and its super exciting to see outside of their own musical practices here, they’re running the drool-inducing Real No Real event series and the enlightening / art-informed archival label Ediciones Fontenebro.  Must respect the hustle!!

En Perpetua though is an engulfing listen from end to end.  A frayed collage of scattered noise fragments, slithers of guitar, the cracked electrical hums of cheap amplifiers, FM radio scuz, smothered vox and strained violin.  It all feels pretty loose and improvised, as if the duo are following where the sounds take them, letting each sound really sweat until the atmosphere hangs heavy and turns claustrophobic.  This new kinda commune folk clearly has roots in the messed-up tapestries of The Shadow Ring, or the decaying windswept post-rock of Yorkshire’s Hood (specifically their rare early tape stuff) or more recent Gothenburg-school of Amateur Hour / Enhet För Fri Musik.  But the psycho-geography of this, owing perhaps to the subtle infusion of recordings from the Spanish countryside, adds an interesting latin twist that recalls the killer drawl folk/blues of Glorias Navalas or that even Lo Escucho, Lo Pinto LP we released a few years back.  The perfect companion for entering a dazed state of groggy introspection.  Hand-made sleeve!  (Mint / New)

"The Madrid duo of Pablo Mirón and Juan Vacas return for their second album 'En Perpetua' as they dive further into their decayed collage and psycho-acoustic-geography. While they remain in similar sonic territory to 'En Perpetua’s' predecessor, 'Of No Fixed Abode', the pair lean into newfound confidence in their process, and the endless possibilities from a new Madrid studio. They employ a selection of instruments including violin, harmonica, voices, guitars, a looper, an FM radio and field recordings from a variety of sources, from the Spanish countryside to exhibition sounds. The result is eight compositions of re-pitched meditations, exploring broken music and rhythmic patterns via their uniquely open-ended, zoned-out tonal journeys."
