A rare perfect album that you could crawl inside and never leave, existing entirely alone on an island free from the strangle-like grip of preconceived genres - Marc Hollander / Aksak Maboul's widely-heralded 1977 treasure Onze Danses Pour Combattre La Migraine. Originally conceived on the short-lived yet disproportionately influential Kamikaze imprint, the cold-fusion of pan-european, ethnographic, proto-everything styles debuted here planted the seed that would grow into the vital Crammed Discs imprint. There's SO many reference points entwined it's daunting, an amalgamation of feral free-jazz, classic american minimalism (echoes of Phillip Glass on' Mastoul Alakefak'??), premonitory detroit-esque drum machine techno, romantic Satie / Debussy impressionism, breezy Parisian cafe culture, hypnotic eastern-referencing hand-drumming, and MORE. A ambitious compound of so, so much, executed to perfection to reveal more of itself every time. If this is your first introduction, I seriously envy you. All-timer - no comparison. (NM/NM)
