JTG's debut LP for Planet Mu. Weirdly overlooked. Tom said this in 2015.. (NM)
Long-standing imprint Planet Mu liberates London-based artist John T Gast from the shadows for a debut LP release with Excerpts. So far, Gast is only known through a scattering of self-released CDRs and his discrete affiliation with Inga Copeland through an under-the-radar 12” and production credits on Hype William’s indomitable Black Is Beautiful LP. It’s this reclusive image that permeates Excerpts, beginning with the brooding drone of ‘Shanti-ites’, followed by the lysergic mechanics of ‘Infection’ and ‘Congress’ – an electrically charged yet desolate house cut with warm sub-bass rolls. Lonely, beat-less pieces such as ‘Green’, ‘White Noise (Reprise)’ and the forlorn closer ‘Torch’ back up the isolated, ruminative nature of the LP; with different facades shining on the bass-heavy drama of ‘Claim Your Limbs’, moody, kosmich styling of ‘Sedna’ and deep, strung-out string play on ‘White Noise / Dys’.
