The big one. Soft, gentle, fuzzed-out, wistful psyche perfection from one-hit wonder-group Hallelujahs captured in the moment and released in cripplingly small quantities via Shinji Shibayama’s cult Kansai-based private press Org Records in 1986. It’s been a longtime white whale on collector’s want-lists and for those deep in the trenches of the Japanese underground, its safe to say ‘Eat Meat, Swear An Oath’ has been close to impossible to own since it’s release, which maybe explains why this record isn’t better known. The group consisted of a bunch of friends who were propping up the underground scene in Osaka and the surrounding area, all of who would go to do their own thing individually - Shibayama did time in Maher Shalal Hash Baz and is still active with his wife as Nagisa Nite, Naoki Zushi went onto form Hijokaidan and also did an amazing solo record on Org records, Chie Mukai is Ché-SHIZU and Takayama did Idiot O’Clock. You get the picture and if you’re into any of these groups and somehow have missed the Hallelujahs then check immediately. It’s warm, melancholic, subtly psychedelic and properly in the moment, mostly recorded in one takes with an emphasis on feeling instead of over-execution. But sometimes, rarely, everything just falls into place. Maybe it’s that illusive emphemal feeling that makes this one so special, the guitars weep and gently sqeel, burying naive vocals in a haze of soft distortion creating an pensive aura of summer slowly ending and time moving on. End to end perfection - still my favourite record.
