Warm and golden LP of Basque folk meets post-rock on the excellent Hegoa label.
Hegoa Diskak was created to shed some light on music from the Basque region. Its first two releases were excellent (that Atanas Akerstra!), but this latest one just might be the best yet.Carcascara are a group of three friends: Iñigo Ugarteburu based in London, and Xabier Iriondo and Fernando Aguirre based in Zarautz in the Basque country. Every 10 years they meet up to make music roots in folk, free-jazz and experimental rock. They all performed together in the wonderful Cafe Teatro group whose single LPon the Talo label is totally worth seeking out. Their first release as a group, a 2007 self titled album also on Talo was a more low key affair. This new LP, a co-release between Hegoa and Talo, feels more focussed and distinct.Soft organs drone, found sound choirs sigh and quiet measured vocals sing plaintive songs. But really this is a guitar record. Sunlit string figures tangle and tumble, and a long afternoon of collective playing stretches into evening. As midsummer approaches this is perfect solstice music.. (Mint / new - with printed postcard)
