Heavily anticipated follow-up double LP epic from Aussie duo CS + Kreme for The Trilogy Tapes, arriving two and a bit years after one of the best debuts of recent times in Snoopy.
It must be hard not to feel the weight of expectation coming off the back of a perfect debut, but despite sharing much of the same unmistakable musical DNA, it’s exciting to hear Orange pushing into new territory. The dimly lit romanticism of Snoopy is contorted into a more psychedelic and intricately detailed space, blessed with the same sense of controlled introversion yet demanding more of the listener with longer track durations and foggier intentions.Recognisable signifiers are embedded but this is definitely new music. The opening pair of Baseline and Shred unspool into disorientating structures, laced with pointillistic percussion, shiny FM synth notes and layers of detailing.Voice Of The Spider channels the same energy of a meandering Villalobos after-hours journey - clipped contorted vocals, serendipitous fragments of melodies and unexpected changes in direction evoking a sense of up-for-days insomnia, whilst Pink Mist calms the nerves with a more stripped-back groove and sustained wind-notes.To their credit it continues to morph and shape shift thru moody piano jazz and crunchy IDM / pop to finally culminate in the near 20 minute sonic ritual of Storm Rips Banana Tree. It’s exciting to see a duo taking risks and pushing their own boundaries, Orange feels so unmistakably new that it’s hard not to take notice.Must check.(Mint / New - with poster).
