Recorded live at Bard College in June of 2023, the album documents a pivotal moment in an ongoing exploration of low frequencies and vibrational phenomena. By modulating her instrument’s signal with a cranked 18-inch subwoofer and an array of effects pedals, the typically light sound of the tromba marina becomes massive and unwieldy, laden with roars of feedback and ghostly wisps of rumbling bass. Shaken to its core, the room itself becomes audible, as the walls vibrate sympathetically with each expulsion of sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter feeling the way in which the speaker’s low frequencies interacted with objects in their direct vicinity, Laprida was reminded of a traumatic experience of a late night earthquake in Bolivia a decade and a half prior. She recalled the fear and confusion of being woken up, the oncoming roll of sound that preceded the shaking of her room, and the clattering of her belongings while she remained in bed, frozen in place. She leaned into that association, collecting exciters from deconstructed speakers and placing them inside boxes and trash cans where they would audibly shake as she played through the subwoofer. We hear the quiver of these exciters on “Trembling,” its title highlighting not only the sounds’ effects on the objects, but also the feeling they elicit. Following the live performance documented on Pitch Dark and Trembling, several listeners approached Laprida to express the strange mixture of unease and enthrallment they felt as they became enveloped by the vibrations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFear and attentiveness come hand in hand, often accompanied by a strange sense of wonderment. Pulsing with humid, clicking beats, and laced with haunting synths, Balikpapan transports us into the physical environment, as well conjuring an emotional landscape filled with a complicated nostalgia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe journey through time and memory is revisited in Sad Sunda, which samples a cassette of ‘pop sunda’, a form of popular music that blends western pop and traditional instrumentation from Java, that his mother brought with the family to Hawaii when they fled Borneo. Composed on an Elektron Octatrack over three decades later, Sully cut the samples into small snippets and randomly resequenced them. The percussion is from Roland CR-78 samples and drum loops pitched down and resampled in the Octatrack; through the frenetic club beats, we hear his current life in Berlin, where he now lives, bleeds into the music of his past.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis migratory experience is apparent in Sully’s music influences, which he names as “Sundanese gamelan, the Beach Boys, pop melayu and eventually punk, industrial, and noise before utterly relinquishing to the music of clandestine raves of Southern California in the late 90s.” For Echoes, Sully synthesises all these through his DIY electronic lens, finding both a sense of playfulness and a melancholia. “Echoes is an attempt at recollecting a hybrid sonic language, an unattainable and elusive ‘home’,” Sully says.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe album ends with a trip to his mother’s actual home. On “Dusted Sparrow \/ Gorrión,” Warpeha’s ruminative fragments of melody trace scenic landscapes while Terán’s flutes dart avian-like above. “Quesintuu \u0026amp; Umantuu” is named after lake dwelling sirens from Bolivian folklore, Warpeha’s voice drifting out of a heaving yet featherlight drone that hovers and modulates throughout the piece. The pinpricks of pizzicato on the album’s title track are like eight tiny legs tracing warped circles. The mind drifts to the trees that provided the wood which has been hollowed and given resonance, as well as the sheep whose intestines make up the core of the fiddle’s strings and whose claws became the chajchas that rattle in the final minutes of the album.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough elements of traditional techniques and harmonies can be heard on Orbweaver, the music is driven by intuition and imagination.
