As for the case of MKS, the enigmatic and musical disguise of Nicolas Aubard, it was a merely coincidental encounter at the end of the 80s that set the stone rolling. For Nico, it all began in his hometown of Saint-Quentin in Northern France. At a young age, he got obsessed with Japanese and American cartoon culture. Being a devoted collector of cartoon-related toys and widgets, he spent hours watching anime series on TV and creating scale models of science fiction and horror-related sceneries. Growing up in a musical household, young Nico took on stringent training in classical and jazz piano. But, frustrated with the fact of not being the technical virtuoso he wanted to be, he turned away from his training at the age of 16. “I had no choice, as I felt as if my creativity got limited by my piano. That’s when I got drawn into the world of synthesizers.” Not long after, Nico put together a home studio and started to experiment with ambience and sound-inserts. Despite years of experimentation and music making, all Nico’s productions stayed between the 4 walls of his modest home studio. Something that would change in 1988, when Nico bumped into Emmanuel “Manu” Prevost.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“We met on a night out in Lille”, Nico recalls. “I usually just stood by the dj booth, as I wasn’t a good dancer. So instead of throwing shapes at the dancefloor, I started a conversation with the dj, who happened to be Manu. By the end of the night, I handed him a demo tape of the album I was wanting to do.” Propelled by good fate, a fruitful collab happened between Nico and this dj. For Manu, everything also fell in place: “At the time, I was looking for a composer to work on producing a new beat record. As a dj, I often crossed the Belgian border for gigs and this new style was in full explosion over there. I heard Nico’s songs and naively told him: “Let’s make an album”, without knowing how.” Despite the high hopes for the new alliance, the project turned out to be a shot in the dark. “I assumed Manu already had some experience, as he proposed to do the mastering himself. But funnily he only told me after the release of the record that it was his first time too. But you know, we managed.” Not willing to release under his own name, Nico came up with Musical Keyboard System, abbreviated as MKS. The alias was born and the journey ready to take off.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe album finally released in September 1989. After the release, Nico went on a low-key promo tour together with Manu in Northern France. “We aired a video clip on FR3 for two songs, together with a short interview. In their studio, we created a scrimpy décor with some green plants to resemble the Vietnam jungle (as for the track Nam Revelation) and we shot the clip. Manu even lay down behind a screen operating the fog machine.” As a live act, MKS’ career was rather short-lived, with a first and final gig in the Theatre of Saint-Quentin a few months after the release. “In France, we would remain illustrious strangers. Yet in the meantime, our music got played on new age radios in the USA.” After the end of MKS, Nico moved to Paris and Manu took on his military duty. In the army, Manu met movie animator Jacques Rouxel (the man behind French cult series Les Shadoks) and got him in touch with Nico. The duo collaborated with Rouxel on some compositions, before they went their separate ways at last. Nico went on to pursue his childhood dream, as a pioneer in France for integrating 3D animations into classical cartoons. Most pieces could never be reproduced exactly because mistakes and uncomfortable settings were of great importance during the recording process. Aside from the many Y Create recordings, Veldman was member of the improvisation group Gorgonzola Legs and kept working intensively with other artists like Fluxus artist and Dutch underground cult-figure Willem de Ridder. With De Ridder, De Ridder’s wife Cora and Nicole hours of spontaneous improvisation, field recordings and radio plays were created. After hearing an album of William S. Burroughs reciting poetry, J-M decided to put poems and spoken word to music. He was a poet in his own right, having already published a.o. Une cure au cancer (A cure for cancer), a book of poems which at times was wrongly sold alongside medical books. At a literary event in Liège, Belgium, he met UK-based writer Paul Buck (author of the novel The Honeymoon Killers) and the two of them decided to collaborate and thus formed 48 Cameras. The name of the collective references photographer Eadweard Muybridge and a poem by Jim Morrison; \"Muybridge derived his animal subjects from the Philadelphia Zoological Garden, male performers from the University. The women were professional artists' models, also actresses and dancers, parading nude before the 48 cameras'' (in The Lords and the new creatures).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is important to note that 48C is somewhat of a non-band. The musicians and collaborators never actually recorded together, and to this day some haven’t even met each other. Originally from southern Catalonia and north-west England respectively, the two – still today – tend to communicate in a poor garble of Spanish, English, Portuguese and Catalan, which gives rise to misunderstanding, disputes and comedy. Still, punk and its scene long remained a foreign field– not many likeminded people in the Ardennes at the time. That’s when Patrick decided to become a DJ going by the name of Disco Banane. Now he could liven up the balls he visited with the music he preferred. Change came when Patrick moved on to other places and ended up in Liège. Not only did he immerse himself fully in the local punk scene, he also discovered Dadaism – two movements that would both strongly influence his own work later. In Liège Patrick frequented La Cave 22 in Rue Jean d’Outremeuse. Every Friday concerts were organised with young Liégeois bands. Unfortunately the place folded after only a couple of months. Patrick was forced to find another venue that programmed punk and he found salvation in Le Cirque d’Hiver. One night he visited the place for a Slits concert, but the British band cancelled at the last minute. Another British punk band, according to Patrick consisting solely of a few shy boys, replaced the Slits. This concert inspired Patrick to set up a musical project of his own. Not long after, he found himself in his basement together with three other local amateurs. A different punk band already used his cellar as a rehearsal space, and the newly formed foursome, which would later call themselves Gheneral Thî et Les Fourmis, gratefully made use of their amps. They themselves brought a Korg MS-20, a bass guitar, a saxophone and a half-torched drum machine to the scene. The drum machine they bought for 20 Belgian francs from a ballroom orchestra that went up in flames. With the bossa nova and rumba rhythms it could still run they created their first songs. Stas would later describe them as “des bruits d’enfer”, noise from hell.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the same period Patrick was asked by a friend to make the music for a documentary about abandoned factory buildings. Patrick jumped at the proposal and made a cassette with some fragments he recorded with Gheneral Thî et Les Fourmis. Without giving it much thought, he made a few copies and sent an unnamed cassette to the magazine Télémoustique. Contrary to his expectations but to his joy, they published a wildly enthusiastic review. This wasn’t without consequences: by his own account, his success with the local girls reached unprecedented heights.\u003cbr\u003eThe next step was founding an own label to release their musical experiments. And so Patrick’s label Home Produkt was created. The label lived up to its name: everything was done by himself, at home at the kitchen table in Rue de Joie in Liège, ranging from recording over design to production and shipment. A DIY method characteristic for many cassette labels that flourished in the 80s. Partly because it was possible to work with smaller volumes, and therefore lower budgets, contrary to vinyl.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHome Produkt embraced experiment and made releasing music created in the kitchen its mission. Next to albums by acts like Gheneral Thî et Les Fourmis and Tara Cross \u0026amp; Stefan Tischler, the label released cult compilations such as Creep-z, An Der Schönen Blauen Donau and Brabançonnes. The idea for the Brabançonnes compilation came to Patrick’s when he heard an appeal from the Belgian government on the radio for new\u003cbr\u003earrangements of the Brabançonne. He asked different artists from his cassette music network to contribute an interpretation of the national anthem. This resulted in a compilation of 33 tracks by artists and bands such as 48 Cameras, Denis Mpunga \u0026amp; Paul K., Bene Gesserit, Vitor Hublot, The Misz and No Unauthorized.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe operational business of the label did not only rest on Patrick’s shoulders. His girlfriend at the time, Pascale G., did the graphic design, assisted by the artists Albert and Guido. This resulted in unique objects, not devoid of tongue in cheek humour. Nothing, including intensive labour, could keep them from realising their ideas. They often put in long days to craft their cassette and (exceptionally also) vinyl covers, but the result was worth the effort every time according to Patrick: “Faire 150 cassettes Brabançonnes et les voir sur une table comme ça, c’est le pied total.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBesides releasing other artists’ music, Patrick made a lot of music himself. Over the years he participated in different musical groups and featured in several compilations of other independent labels, under the name of Paul K. He loved to hide behind pseudonyms, such as Sats Kirtap, his name written backwards. In 1980 Patrick met Denis Mpunga, who at the time was a member of the groups Gomma Percussions and Eko-Kuango. It was Patrick who encouraged Mpunga to make less mainstream music and urged him to experiment more. Together they formed “Denis Mpunga \u0026amp; Paul K” and would release several works in the shape of K7\/ cassettes or vinyl.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePatrick stopped at his peak, although this was, like himself, relatively modest. A son arrived on the scene and changed his priorities. The label operations at the kitchen table had to clear the way for bread and butter and nappy changing. After becoming a parent, Patrick invested a lot in teaching. He was a professor at the Haute Ecole de Liège in the department of social sciences, where he taught Multimedia Writing and Interactive Narration. Music occupied an important place in his lessons and teaching activities. When family responsibilities receded again many years later, he did not find the energy to bring the label back to life. But he continued making music forever, at home, with the MS-20 and his computer, or on the iPad.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLate in 2020, Patrick Stas unexpectedly shuffled off this mortal coil. It sums up Enno's life in a nutshell: a happy childhood in the fifties, followed by the sex, drugs and rock \u0026amp; roll of the sixties and a shifted perception of reality in the seventies. It also captures Enno’s sense of humour and self-mockery. Enno loved the music, humour and weirdness of the early Mothers, although he mostly favoured British bands like The Pretty Things, The Who, Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience in the sixties. From his early childhood Enno was a loner, a sensitive dreamer, often drifting off into his own world, using music as his main language and a way of getting in touch with his inner feelings and connecting with others. During the turbulent late sixties, psychedelics permanently ripped out the gates to a parallel universe, from which he couldn’t escape since. It left him isolated, living in a small room in his mother’s apartment in the eighties. This became his home studio where he created the music you can experience on this album.
