Their creativity was manifested through variety of media – music, performance and action art, visual arts, poetry, samizdat, the introduction video art in Latvia etc. NSRD also made a significant contribution to the explanation of the theoretical aspects of art in the interpretation of the postmodernist movement, and developed the independent concept of “Approximate Art”. It was a world recorded on tapes and reels. A world where things happened according to personal logic based on sonic exploration, electronic sounds and improvisation. The approach was intimate, at times light-hearted, but often following deep inner contemplation and total immersion in the creative process. Above all, music was made according to the Do-It-Yourself principle of the home-taping culture.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe home-taping network established itself globally during the late 70’s and kept blooming throughout the 80’s. It was a self-exploring, self-sustained music culture of people sending each other home recorded music material on cassettes. No external music industry was interfering with the musical works. The making of the music, the different releases and the labels were all self-managed. Wonderful international cassette compilations were created that showed the intensive musical exchange at play between the home-tapers. Cassettes were often accompanied by all sorts of printed matter and resulted in little pieces of individual artworks. Hessel Veldman played a protagonist role in the Dutch home-taping network\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewhile also maintaining a large international network of contacts.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUnder the moniker Y Create (Why create? or Ymuidense creations) many cassettes were recorded at home as well as in collaboration with others. Simultaneously, Veldman created his own cassette label Exart with his wife Nicole Veldman on which their own and other artists productions were published. The label was created to spread and exchange experimental and improvised music made in home-studio’s. The Exart home-studio was the place where compositions, recordings, radio-programs, mixes and remixes were made. Veldman has stated that out of hours of home recordings a few tracks would derive that had captured rare and special tracks or rare sonic atmospheres that would be selected for a release. Most pieces could never be reproduced exactly because mistakes and uncomfortable settings were of great importance during the recording process. Aside from the many Y Create recordings, Veldman was member of the improvisation group Gorgonzola Legs and kept working intensively with other artists like Fluxus artist and Dutch underground cult-figure Willem de Ridder. With De Ridder, De Ridder’s wife Cora and Nicole hours of spontaneous improvisation, field recordings and radio plays were created. They recorded deeply shared intimate experiences with each other but also used theatrical storytelling.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHessel Veldman’s diverse music practices have been traversing several decades by now and he continues to play music according to his own insights and intuitions today. Eigen Boezem is a collection of tracks gathered from different cassettes from his body of work that capture moments of magical home recordings. Eigen Boezem displays the versatility of his musical output and creativity, ranging from industrial experiments to new wave - from trance inducing avant-pop to synthetic minimalist funk. Une cure au cancer (A cure for cancer), a book of poems which at times was wrongly sold alongside medical books. At a literary event in Liège, Belgium, he met UK-based writer Paul Buck (author of the novel The Honeymoon Killers) and the two of them decided to collaborate and thus formed 48 Cameras. The name of the collective references photographer Eadweard Muybridge and a poem by Jim Morrison; \"Muybridge derived his animal subjects from the Philadelphia Zoological Garden, male performers from the University. The women were professional artists' models, also actresses and dancers, parading nude before the 48 cameras'' (in The Lords and the new creatures).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is important to note that 48C is somewhat of a non-band. The musicians and collaborators never actually recorded together, and to this day some haven’t even met each other. All of this was carefully collected in decently structured Atoma notebooks full of polaroids, annotations and cut-out photos of paintings and advertisements of cigarettes. Serra aka Ubaldo whose ‘Casa’ LP back in 2020 had us totally bowled over.  Their differences in language also translates to their playing style, Leonard more folk \/ blues informed and lyrical whilst Serra casts thick webs of textural fuzz and melodic clusters, but their telepathic understanding of one another creates something well more than the sum of their parts.  It really is the sorta stuff we admittedly lap right up every time, bringing to mind some of our all-time favourite guitar albums - namely Keiji Haino \u0026amp; Loren Connors searing string duets ‘Volume 2’ or that spellbinding Washing Machine cassette from Irma Vep \u0026amp; Jon Collin - there’s obviously some alchemical reaction in our tiny brains when varying textures on guitar collide.  The duo really manage to cover a lot of ground throughout, striking the perfect balances between tortured high-lonesome brooding to introspective and impossibly minute finger picking to wheezing basement clatter usually reserved for the likes of Siltbreeze, Xpressway or any of your favourite NZ DIY giants.  One that really melts your core, landing at the very best time.  (Mint \/ New)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOR SOBRE BLAU is the duo of Andreu G. Serra [ Ubaldo ] and Kiran Leonard. The project originated in 2017 when the pair lived together in Penha de França, Lisbon, after having moved to Portugal at the same time by chance. Originally from southern Catalonia and north-west England respectively, the two – still today – tend to communicate in a poor garble of Spanish, English, Portuguese and Catalan, which gives rise to misunderstanding, disputes and comedy. The work of the duo is firmly rooted in a constant geographical and linguistic dislocation, as reflected in the project’s name, a literal translation into Catalan of the Portuguese idiom ‘ouro sobre azul’ (blue over gold), roughly equivalent to the English phrase ‘the cherry on top’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTrue to the project’s form, the pair have rarely lived together in the same place; only at the very beginning, in Lisbon, where their debut cassette the Piri Piri Samplers was recorded. First released by Memorials of Distinction in 2019, the cassette is an attempt to map the members’ distinct and complementary approaches to the guitar: Serra’s use of pedals and tapes to create thick, winding soundscapes, drones occasionally punctured by splenetic stabs and flourishes; Leonard’s more traditional, direct-line technique, often acting as harmonic foil. Since then, the project has intermittently resurfaced when the pair find themselves in the same space again: most notably for a stretch of dates in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2019, built around Serra’s residency at Brussels’ Les Ateliers Claus and the duo’s appearance at Meakusma Festival. It sums up Enno's life in a nutshell: a happy childhood in the fifties, followed by the sex, drugs and rock \u0026amp; roll of the sixties and a shifted perception of reality in the seventies. It also captures Enno’s sense of humour and self-mockery. Enno loved the music, humour and weirdness of the early Mothers, although he mostly favoured British bands like The Pretty Things, The Who, Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience in the sixties. From his early childhood Enno was a loner, a sensitive dreamer, often drifting off into his own world, using music as his main language and a way of getting in touch with his inner feelings and connecting with others. During the turbulent late sixties, psychedelics permanently ripped out the gates to a parallel universe, from which he couldn’t escape since. It left him isolated, living in a small room in his mother’s apartment in the eighties. This became his home studio where he created the music you can experience on this album. All tracks were recorded here on a four-track Tascam 244 Portastudio cassette recorder. On 'Kouma Lil', Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė and Bert Cools experiment with digital images of the kanklės (a traditional Lithuanian chordophone), and Jurgelevičiūtė's voice, blurring the boundary between the organic and the artificial, while on 'Spindulė, French percussionist Toma Gouband adds percussion from his custom-made sounding stones to Jurgelevičiūtė's gentle words and Cools' surreal, sensuous electronics.
