WOW!! Shop fav Jon Collin runs off a crucial vinyl run via his Early Music private press documenting a live performance together with US improviser Sarah Hughes at Rhizome in Washington, DC. Originally circulating as a short-run CDr back in 2019, the two sides see Collin’s stone-cold blues minimalism providing a solid bedrock and wide-open space for Hughes’ woodwind to saunter. Deployed with acute restraint, Collin’s quivering blues tremolo casts bare-bones, impressionistic texture before Hughes’ reeds begin to purr - tentative at first, but rising in intensity and growing in confidence to a climatic, free-flowing moment of pure rapture. Anyone who caught Jon’s recentish ‘The Fiddler Now Steps To The Road’ tape for Unifactor will be instantly blown away, but it’s interesting to hear the Lancastican guitarist take on a more supporting role whilst still improving in the moment.
