Subtle but deeply affecting piano meditations from Australian artist Mark Gomes aka Blue Chemise, following on from well-received releases for Students Of Decay, Gothenburg’s I Dischi Del Barone and a low flying cassette for Stockport’s own Regional Bears label. It takes influence from the still life floral paintings by 19th Century artist Adolphe Braun and moves through 8 stripped-back, delicately constructed piano études each set within their own environment of field recordings, arching strings and soft drone undercurrents to create a unique feel of mise en scène. Satie’s stark piano pieces feel like the most obvious comparable, or Dominique Lawalrée solemn post modern compositions, but the defining characteristic between all these hermetic artists is the use of sound to create its own all-composing environment and triggering a strong sense of melancholy with the most minimal of means.
