Diverse and habit-forming album of ambient/industrial synth constructions from Japan’s Carre
This CD came out in 2019 in a series commissioned by Japanese Tea company Ujikoen. Here Carre combine their clear love for Europe-endless style golden age electronics with field recordings made in a Kyoto teahouse garden. If so far all of this sounds a bit too music-from-memory-stick, hold fire, there’s an uncanny atmosphere at work here that dispels the waft of palo santo. The sounds seem to shift and decay, striking each other oddly and creating a record that keeps pulling you back toward its unnervingly still centre. There are all sorts of records to compare this with - mainly euro-synth-prog head music touchstones like Roland Bouquet’s Paradia, Pinok Et Matho’s music for mime LPs or the brilliant Hemetic Sunsets Aroma Club series. But when the whole thing is this well constructed and effortlessly odd, who cares? More Tea? (mint / new)
