An unlikely cultural and musical cross pollination that totally shouldn’t work but… does.In New York captures a live performance between Bachir Attar - current leader ofthe legendary Moroccan Jbala Surfi trance group The Master Musicians Of Joujouka, and downtown NYC mainstay and serial collaborator Elliott Sharp.Attar’s group is part of a centuries-old linage of collective musicians who have continued their ancient musical tradition passed down through their ancestors in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco.Their extended concerts (often lasting days) drew the attention of the Beat Generation, namely Brian Gysin and Burroughs, eventually leading to the fabled recordings carried out by late Rolling Stones member Brian Jones, which would eventually open up an ongoing conversation with western musicians that continues to the present day.Elliott Sharp’s crushing, bone-dry drum machine patterns provide an unexpected but intoxicating companion to the trance-inducing, repetitious plucked guembri notes of Attar, whilst the effected flute riffs and tumbling 808 / 909 ? (drum machine buffs help me out) claps / toms on the title track join in force to create a unique dancefloor curveball.Similar to Mikel Rouse’s amazing Quorum LP, the electronic elements feel oddly academic and clinical, but here mixed with the ancient berber instrumentation it lends a welcome contemporary twist and further advancement to the continued east / west allegiance that underpins the modern Master Musicians Of Joujouka..(Mint / New)
