Label: Yellow Swans Archive – YSA1 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue Country: US Released: 28 Aug 2020 Genre: Electronic Style: Drone, Power Electronics, Noise
Ten years after it’s original inception, the final transmission from Peter Swanson and Gabriel Saloman’s seminal noise project Yellow Swans resurfaces.Having been aware of the project for sometime but never fully plunging in since their extensive discography, a labyrinth of self-released CDrs and shifting variations of name play, proving just too daunting for my tiny brain, this one has finally cut so deep.Operating on the frontline of the fertile 00’s noise scene, Yellow Swans utilised outdated hardware, instruments and FX pedals whilst distilling the worlds of free improv, dub, industrial, punk, noise, ambient +++ to create their confronting, heavily psychedelic walls of sound, whilst playing countless shows heavily instilled with the true spirit of DIY.It’s thick, dense blankets of sound, burning memories into your brain, but there’s beauty and light nestled under the heavy fog of overdriven electronics. The heavy-set torrents of distortion occasionally punctuated by glimmers of melancholy and genuine human emotion that puts it at odds with the endless plethora of v forgettable noise / power electronics projects.Listening deeply, there’re a hundred and then also no things this recalls, everything building, swelling and then searing back into scorched moments of pure cathartic bliss.Seriously vital works, coming highly recommended if yr into Jefre Cantu-Ledesma’s ’Shining Skull Breath’, Grouper or Amateur Hour bits from Gothenburg.(Mint / New)
