Early entry to Chris Cutler's sporadic sound-magazine Re Records Quarterly - a series focusing on newly released or previously unreleased outsider music, comprised of an LP and accompanying magazine. From first glance, it's pretty obvious that the whole thing must have been a total financial blackhole - the screen-printing and quality of the printed material is seriously HIGH.. that coupled with the limited appeal of the music is fertile grounds for serious monetary haemorrhage. HOWEVER - the global nature of the series, such as being one of the first imprints to offer pop music from behind the Iron Curtain to the west, ensured that ppl with a curious ear got their fix. Very admirable. But back to this one, highlights! One piece of lurching, free-form instrumental slurry from the C.W. Vrtacek associated and tricky-to-pin-down Biota outfit, plus one from Hungarian ska-influenced, new-wave group Kontroll Csoport. Best pick however goes to Rob Wyatt though with 'Pigs' - a confirmed favourite of the late John Peel and the perfect cold-fusion of squirming synth notes, jangling percussion and Wyatt's quintessentially British accent reminiscing over his time in the countryside, albeit with a twist. Magazine alone worth the entry ticket. Great series! (NM/NM - with booklet).
