Prolific Lancastrian expat Jon Collin takes matters into his own hands with this self-issue on Early Music of the 2024 LP The Other Dead Sea.
A seemingly endless well of creative output, we’ve never been shy about declaring our adoration for Jon’s work. This one sorta almost surfaced on an Italian label back early 2024, but never really got off the ground due to a cripplingly (and pointlessly!!!) limited pressing and mishaps with distribution. Alas, Jon’s own painstakingly hand-assembled Early Music label swoops in to clean up the mess.
With each release seemingly / inexplicably eclipsing the previous, here Jon showcasing the depth and breath of his talents on the guitar, effortlessly melting from impossibly dextrous pensive fingerpickin’ blues to billowing drone pieces and beautifully transportive atmospherics in a way that seems totally effortless. The 19 minute epic ‘The Lowering’ might well be our favourite piece we’ve heard from Jon - journeying from stirring acoustic slide guitar improv into soporific string repetitions and lilting bowed chords. It’s a complex and detailed piece executed seamlessly, equip with the power to stop you right in your tracks and carry you away to another place entirely. What more could you ask for? Perhaps the most all-encompasing LP that showcases the full range of this man’s unique musical talents. Beautiful hand-made sleeve, hand-written titles and insert. (Mint / New)
