A true eccentric avant-garde classic from Aksak Maboul - the group formed by Congotronics producer Vincent Kenis and Crammed Discs label head Marc Hollander, with their '80 LP Un Peu De L'Âme Des Bandits.  Coming three years after their incredible debut on Kamikaze (Onze Danses Pour Combattre La Migraine), this one sits right in that sweet spot between jazz / rock / prog but its essentially a vast disorientating hotchpotch of styles, an approach that came to define the seminal Crammed Discs imprint.  Equally indebted to traditional North African styles as it is to classical European baroque, it never lets you settle, favouring more a chaotic approach rambling from a stripped drum machine to screeching dissonant guitars, wild free-jazz bursts and tense to creeping synth drones with a complete lack of respect for cohesion.  Maybes not for everyone but certainly a brave mongrel of a record that unshackled many others in its wake.  Crucial!  (NM/VG++ - original Crammed issue).
