Sofie Herner and Dan Johansson’s seminal debut LP under their joint Neutral finally finds its way back into circulation thanks to Simon Joiner’s Grapefruit Records. Struggling to know where to even start with this - but Grå Våg Gamlestaden is widely accepted as the record that ignited the raging wildfire of creativity that is the current Gothenburg underground, laying the foundations for Enhet för Fri Musik, Monokultur, Amateur Hour, Blod and many others that continue to thrive off its influence. It’s a greyscale, oppressive and mostly BLEAK expansive of searing / scorched guitar lines and smouldering, throbbing rhythms that coalesce into dense, claustrophobic soundscapes. Sofie Herner provides the lion-share of the instruments and vocals, whilst Johansson gets to work manhandling the recordings and shaping the sound with reel-to-reel techniques and whatever else studio black magic, rendering Herner’s voice bled dry of any discernible emotion. Yeah, it’s bleak, but it’s more of fuck you we don’t give a shit sort of harshness as opposed to wallowing in its own misery and pity - building to a sense of catharticism and redemption on the (dare I say pretty) closing track ‘Marie Holm’. Absolute life-changer, take note! (Mint / New - gatefold).
