The wonderfully hand-scrawled \/ photo-collaged insert retells the story of how the gig came about, with details alleged about how the group turned up to play on an industrial estate on the outskirts of the Swedish city of Växjö (alleged once a medieval trading centre that’s pivoted to ‘the greenest city in Europe’) at a venue affectionately named ‘Funkibator’. Despite the primitive recording means, the recordings capture the raw essence of the show - Herner’s droned, spine-scraping, bowed guitar givin’ the feel of Tony Conrad on the wrong side of a 3 day bender whilst Dan Johansson’s head-mangling tape manipulation dragging us deeper into into a stupefied yet acutely aware state. The band’s leader Kryssi Battalene plays powerful, ultra-sustained guitar leads that bring to mind the likes of White Heaven’s Michio Kuihara, while the rest of the band is able to patiently build to a triumphant peak in the same vein as Marble Sheep’s finest jams. However, the true climax of the track comes when David Shapiro jumps in for a rare dueling solo with Battalene - making this amongst Headroom’s best moments thus far. Track 2 on side A is from Headroom’s third guitarist Stefan Christensen. The past few years have seen Christensen steadily releasing some of the best homespun, outsider psych around today. On “Commute” he weaves together lush guitar tones, thumpingly amateur piano and a few happy-tape-accidents into a distinctive 10-minute piece. Aided by his masterful working of the Yamaha MT8X, the track features dynamic fluctuations and abrupt yet natural shifts. “Commute” comes from Christensen’s not-intended-for-release archive of attempts to mimic, but not cover, his influences. This particular song aims to fuse two sides of a New Zealand lathe-cut and does so with such cunning that it becomes its own individual piece.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOpening side B is a sprawling guitar and organ drone from Alexander AKA David Shapiro. This track calls to mind Shapiro’s decade plus of work with Ian McColm as Nagual (now renamed Center with the addition of Christensen to the group). The side continues, and the record culminates appropriately with Mountain Movers. Movers are arguably the harnessing focal point of The Crew, with this particular lineup of the band having lasted nearly a decade and bringing two generations of New Haven musicians together. Led by songwriter Dan Greene, Mountain Movers have evolved to not only play his tunes but also to improvise with one another on stretched out jams, like the one included here. “Deep In The Valley” nearly made its way onto their most recent long-player, Pink Skies, but an 11th hour decision reserved it for this compilation. The jam features interplay between Greene and Battalene’s guitars that ranges from relaxed, nearly Classic Rock tunefulness to full on blazing hiss and howl. Meanwhile, Ross Menze and Rick Omonte (also Headroom’s rhythm section) guide the jam with an expertise that allows for several peaks and valleys, with Menze’s full-Animal-style drum madness ultimately taking over and bringing listeners to the true pinnacle.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTime and technology have rendered the scene comp largely useless (and perhaps compilations in general). Despite the format’s long and fabled history, streaming platforms have made it simple to check out massive amounts of music and destroyed the need for several artists to be captured on a single record. Documenting two live performances from 2008, it’s a startling, wild freedom chase, each piece stretching languorously across one side of the vinyl, giving the trio maximum space to thunder their way through space and time. Their West Nile 2008 show, on side one, opens with a battery of drums, fierce and livid, before Shiraishi’s unmistakable and remarkable whinnying, high-zone tone slithers into earshot. The stage is set, the battle moves forward, yet there’s remarkable simpatico between the three players, with Mico and Welch volleying guttural vocal exhortations at each other. When it does offer respite – see the sudden swoop into near-silence at around 12:30– everything’s still tense; who knows what’s around the corner?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor all its fury, though, Tearful Face Of My Cute Love… is full of oddly lyrical moments, too – see the sweet melody that winds out, with gentle melancholy, near the very end of the West Nile performance. This lyricism also haunts the second side of the album, a performance from Glassland, Brooklyn, which seems more focused on the intersection of incidents, from clattering cymbals to ghostly swarms of sax scream, to dive-bombing spirals of vocoder. Even though I have created my work unconsciously, the most inspiring thing in my work came from Korean female shaman Mudang.” Paik himself was a master shaman and vividly used shaman rituals and symbols for staging his performances and installations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese recordings also became a way for me to explore the mythic form of radio—a medium which is full of mysteries. The transmissions captured may be “secret broadcasts” on anonymous radio stations. There are in fact hundreds of those stations around the world, although the numbers dwindle as clandestine messages can now be sent via encrypted digital channels. Some of these stations were likely for military use or espionage or relics of the Cold War. But many others continue without apparent explanation. The A-side consists of a new mix of the massive recording that became known as the 'Blue lagoon', originally released in a tiny edition on the short-lived imprint Inkasso Kassetter in 2009. Sort of inspired by the then exploding new age-y movement of spraypainted DIY cassette culture, the track is a suggestive blend of tropical loops and brittle, hazy electronics with an almost Yeast Culturian approach to continuous longform composition. 'Desperate Attempts' on the flipside was originally released on Joy De Vivre in 2011 as a split cassette with Elisha Morningstar. You're never better than your record collection and the track shows a very different side of the project. Initially chaotic and almost FMP-like free jazz skronk mixed up with severe slices of what was once upon a time refered to as \"Swedish tape noise\", the track suddenly slows down to something that predates a sound that Neutral perfected and cemented a couple of years later.
