Stock copies of Toulouse Lowtrax’s killer ’14 EP of sleazy art-dance rhythm-trax.

Detlef Weinrich’s Toulouse Lowtrax alias probably needs no introduction. But here we go anyway.

As well as his work as a member of 90s-til-now Düsseldorf post-rock art school heroes Kreidler, from the mid 2000s on, he has been the wellspring of a particular strand of wonky-but-chic industrial influenced percussive dance music. As resident at the Salon Des Amateurs alongside Lena Willikens and Vladimir Ivkovic he created a messy, fun, high-concept approach to club music where slow crunchy records by Coil or psychedelic drum workouts by Embryo sat alongside arty new beat, experimental techno and weird pop.

His Untitled EP, inexplicably still in print via Karaoke Kalk, its a great primer for his production style. It evokes the long history of German dance music - from the weirdly funky clatter of the Monks via Kraftwerk’s homemade drum pads, Neubauten’s auto-destructive bone shaking and DAF’s strict-time fetish pop to the kind of loopy swinging outliers released on Perlon and Playhouse. The tempo is slow and determined, the bass is dark and the feeling is occasionally so claustrophobic and sweaty that it becomes transcendent within its tight constraints. But there is a light touch too - sly humour and euro-arthouse soundtrack melody appear occasionally alongside the marching sex robots. Totally original low-key dance music genius still hiding in plain sight..(mint / new)
