An intricate tapestry of softly percolating rhythm and sleepy melody on forgotten hero Pascal Schafer’s only full-length..

Another gem from the backlist of Berlin’s wonderful Karaoke Kalk. Pascal Schafer’s follow up to Melody Express is a more complex beast than its predecessor. Stretching out over a longer running-time it’s a gem of 00s ambient-dance that sounds unnervingly fresh. The spirit of micro-house is still present as is the free-wheeling kraut rock experimentation. But now they are joined by balmy pads and the full toolkit of post ‘world music’ percussion. The main development is that the whole thing is bathed in a less rigorous sense of time. The record is a trapdoor to a slower less distinct place. Woozy keys and gently plucked kalimba tumble against Gieger counter clicks and soft static. Drums surface and disappear again as jazz samples fall together to break apart and high floating catches of synth melody linger before trailing away. All of these varied and disparate elements are woven into a beautifully composed whole that seems to reveal something new each time you listen. Music for pink skies.  (Mint / New - deadstock)
