Captivating do-it-yourself minimalism from up and coming Copenhagen-based musician Jonas Torstensson, acting here as Franciska.

As always it’s increasingly hard to keep up with the fertile experimental music scene in Scandinavia, here Gothenburg store / label Discreet music introduce yet another new name to us with strong links to the intriguing Forget Kornmod label. It’s fair to say that if we had a type, it would be people playing piano the whilst no-one is listening, so we’ve obviously fallen hard for this one. The a-side captures Torstensson on the ivories in-between classes at classical music collage, half-realised ideas being developed in realtime whilst the every-day sound of the environment leaks in. Is there any music more honest and unassuming than this? The playing is gentle, melancholic, simple yet full of character - it could easily be mistaken for Astrid Øster Mortensen, or pieces from Atsuo Ogawa’s excellent piano-only Tabi Tape mix from 2022. Or imagine Dominique Lawalree half-practising at home for his own enjoyment, or a lost recording from Colette Roper. Okay maybe pushing it but you get the idea. The B-side treads a lonelier path. Pensive, isolated piano notes set within a white-out of wintry field-recordings, warbling tape hiss and electronics that feels very at home with the Förlag För Fri Musik aesthetic or Arv & Miljö’s seasonally-inspired soundscape series. The perfect introduction to a budding new scene we’re really excited about.. (Mint / New)
