Hirsch on his own Makiphon label.

In a musical landscape of endless plagiarism, re-appropriation and heavy-handed sampling it’s gotta be difficult for any artist to find their voice. Hirsch continues to fly well under the radar but his practice of inventing his own instruments (Carbophone, Electrified Palm Leaf??) maintains a sound that’s both distinctive and recognisable. It’s irresistibly trippy and dub-destroyed… Hirsch’s plucked carbophon notes sound like Francis Bebey’s mollifying m’bira keys that have been doused in echo + delay then plunged into a deep watery abyss Porter Ricks style. The whole Werkbund / Mechthild Von Leusch linage also feels aesthetically within reach, yet without all the doom and gloom of the mysterious Hamberg sect - Hirsch manages to inject a sense of fun, almost humour (!) into this music which would undeniably pair well with any lysergic accompaniment of your choosing. A perfect oneway ticket to an exotic imagery land where a different type of lizard is in charge.. (Mint / New - with free DL // shops pls ask for wholesale).

Over the years, Andreas O. Hirsch has shaped a distinctive sound, exploring the possibilities of the electro-acoustic instruments he constructs. The Carbophone as well as the Electrified Palm Leaf are plucked instruments akin to the African Kalimba or Mbira. In combination with effects and loops, Hirsch creates an experimental space, influenced by early electronics, Asian and African music as well as the possibilities of editing and collage. The majority of the pieces on The Salamander Treaty were made using the Carbophone Jr., a small traveling version of his original Carbophone which was the basis of the previously released Early Carbophonics. Shaped by the joy of discovery, the eight tracks traverse peculiar worlds of sound, carried by a warm downbeat and analogue vibe. Alongside the Carbophone Jr., other instruments come into play: a vibrato-soaked guitar leads through the slowly evolving ‘Rise’, marked by a recurring Shepard tone and sounds made by striking the bars of an antique wall clock. In the straightforward yet sub-aquatic ‘Teatime Unlimited’, a pitch-shifted Morse key wanders erratically in the background. Tape-delayed harmonicas serve as a flying carpet for ‘Drifting Newts’, and rubber bands make their melodic-rhythmical appearance through ‘Back Door Minimal’.

The Salamander Treaty refers to War with the Newts, a prophetic and black-humoured science fiction novel by Karel Čapek from 1936, which tells the story of the rise of the salamanders, who become increasingly intelligent and eventually begin to compete with mankind. The album is a pacifist response to this dark scenario: Hirsch’s salamanders prefer to hang out under the stars (‘Drifting Newts’), drink tea (‘Tea Time Unlimited’) and — as illustrated on the back cover — write conspiratorial-pacifist demands instead of calling for war (e.g., ‘Teaoism International’, ‘White Lilies’, ‘For Congress’). In image and word, the album invites looking at the term ‘treaty’, which phonetically contains the words ‘tree’ and ‘tea’, as a friendly reminder that the drafting of every treaty and agreement on this planet should be accompanied by a peaceful spirit.

Tracklist
A1 Back Door Minimal 2:57
A2 Rise 4:24
A3 Drifting Newts 4:47
A4 Teaoism International 3:00
B1 Parade 3:48
B2 White Lilies 3:19
B3 For Congress 4:25
B4 Teatime Unlimited 2:40

Label: Ever/Never – e/n-084
Format: Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM
Country: US
Released: 7 Mar 2025
Genre: Rock, Pop
Style: LOFI

Singer-songwriter Donna Allen (Chronophage, Love & Compassion) is back with her second Song Diary. The majority of these tracks have been physically out of print for decades, and were originally released on a variety of labels including Mille Plateaux, Daisyworld Discs (Haruomi Hosono of YMO's private imprint), Instinct Ambient, Caipirinha Productions, and of course Thaemlitz' own Comatonse Recordings. The first disc, Snowflakes, focuses on tracks that are more conventionally ambient or perhaps even "pretty." Dog Whistles, the second disc, compiles tracks featuring a chaotic array of samples and sounds that are more overtly related to themes of gender- and sexual variance.
Thaemlitz frames the tracks with a new 9000 word essay spread across two large posters, providing a basic introduction to the underlying topics, ideas, contexts and histories behind electroacoustic ambient - both as a genre in the broader sense, and in specific relation to her own work. From the text:

Most of the questions posed over the years in these tracks remain in tension with contemporary mainstream views, including those coming from the LGBT establishment. It is a wonder of DIY production with a rich and layered sound that belies their humble means. Although about half of the songs on the demo would wind up being re-recorded for the studio LP, the demo versions are radically different from what is heard on their proper album. There is a feeling of intensity to the demo that was missing from the LP, which had a noticeably cleaner fidelity and more subdued playing. Here the band plays with true force and determination, with Stack’s socialist leaning lyrics taking on an extra sharp bite. Unafraid to show off their skills at writing irresistibly catchy pop songs, things are carried on by Alig’s big bass sound and a barrage of polyrhythmic dueling drums and percussion. The Lo Yo Yo tapped into a truly special sound, perfectly exemplified on these recordings.

Just when you think you’ve completed the puzzle of arty, dubby 80s post-punk, a stray piece is found on the proverbial floor, just waiting to be picked up. Uncanny flatness conceals unfolding textures, transparent layers and open tabs. The truck cuts the landscape, tracing the road with a line of mad logic that composites time, space, thought. On “Le Camion de Marguerite Duras,” French duo Jean-Marie Mercimek have returned with a road movie for the blind. Composed and recorded by Marion Molle and Ronan Riou over six years across France and Belgium, this unlikely distillation of microtonal MIDI composition, French B.O., and post-punk chansons brazenly expands the duos’ penchant for lowkey narrative spectacle.

Across “Le Camion,” sounds form a theatrical screen. Our ears are the curtains drawn wide and listening with a look that pans across the shot. No title cards, they cut straight to action. The truck is a camera, zooming and framing the tracks as scenes. Songwriting and sound design blur in a tangle of delicate economy. The balance of mutant music-boxes and dewy miniatures recalls otherworldly hits from Gareth Williams’ Flaming Tunes, Residents, and catchier corners of the Lovely Music catalog. Strange, sure, but this flick is never quite a cartoon. Molle and Riou’s vocals dilate into a cast of very human characters. Voices sing borrowed texts like untrained actors (playing themselves, in fact) stepping into the frame once before disappearing forever. And when they’re gone, you miss them. At the heart of the project is Meldgaard’s compositions and performance on New Ondomo—a Japanese instrument modeled on the pioneering French electronic instrument, the ondes Martenot, but what makes the music truly shine is the Copenhagen Clarinet Choir’s vibrant energy and adventurous spirit, bringing Meldgaard’s vision off the page and into a living, breathing soundscape through their playful and imaginative ensemble performance.

The initial spark for Jeux d’eau was struck during Meldgaard’s visit to the gardens of Villa d’Este in Tivoli, Italy—a place animated by fountains that once inspired Franz Liszt and Maurice Ravel to compose piano works of the same title. Echoing these earlier musical impressions, the project channels that lineage into a new sonic journey. Where some composers of the past often sought to define strict structures, Meldgaard’s work on Jeux d’eau instead offers an open framework—one that invites playful interaction and improvisation among the musicians. Recorded at The Village in Copenhagen, the album is a sonic experience where the organic resonance of the clarinet choir intertwines with the unpredictable textures of the New Ondomo and electronic landscape.

The work Jeux d’eau is open yet structured, forward-moving yet richly repetitive, drawing clear inspiration from American minimalists such as Terry Riley and Steve Reich, but rather than simply echoing the work of these pioneers, the music explores fresh terrain infused with a lyrical touch of late-romantic European sensibility, where flowing melodies and rich harmonies soften the rigor of repetition. At the same time, the music resonates with the clarity and delicacy that could be associated with Japanese composers such as Jo Kondo or Sueko Nagayo. The result is a sound world that is playful yet profound, one that continually shifts between pulsating momentum and delicate stillness. With each piece, the ensemble invites listeners into a captivating journey where tradition meets experiment, and where collective performance transforms composition into something vividly alive.

Conceived as a tribute to water and a reflection on the fragile bond between humans and the natural world, Jeux d’eau is both a sonic meditation and a quiet call to action. Through fluid forms and open notations, the work draws listeners into a space where music mirrors the dynamics of nature—demanding real-time awareness, collective sensitivity, and respect for balance. Like flowing water, the music adapts and transforms, reminding us that our environment, too, is ever-changing and in need of care. In this way, Jeux d’eau does more than celebrate nature’s beauty: it asks us to recognize our responsibility to protect the living systems that sustain us, and to pay caring attention to the world we live in.

Jeux d’eau will be released worldwide in digital formats on November 12, 2025, with vinyl editions available in Europe on År & Dag and in Japan via Tokyo based Conatala Records.

(Mint / New - shops pls ask for wholesale)

Tracklist
A1 Joyfully, We Leave The Tended Garden 1:45
A2 Entering The Fray 4:20
A3 Uncharted Streams 3:11
A4 Xerophyte 3:01
A5 Diffuser Dream 3:13
B1 ’Til Seas Do Us Part 0:47
B2 Effervescence 6:16
B3 Alone Amongst The Blooms And Bees 2:14
B4 Unabashed Waveforms 5:06
B5 ...The End Is A New Beginning... 2:55

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0020/7755/6791/files/IMG_0667_c22d86df-60bf-423a-aae3-c8259e4dc249.jpg?v=1762863299
takako-minekawa-traces-of-the-ceiling
Takako Minekawa – Traces Of The Ceiling

Label: tone poem – poem-001
Format: Vinyl, LP, Limited Edition
Country: US
Released: 28 Jun 2025
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient, Experimental

'Traces of the ceiling’ is the new album by Takako Minekawa, an artistic collaboration between Minekawa who composed, performed and recorded the works contained within - and artist Ippei Matsui, who created and designed the accompanying elaborate five-panel fold out sleeve, risograph inserts, and vinyl. ‘traces of the ceiling’ is also the debut release from Portland, Oregon based shop, label, and event series tone poem.

‘traces of the ceiling’ was recorded in los angeles between 2018 and 2020, and many of the works featured on the release were originally created and released (at that time called ‘untitled’) on the occasion of Ippei Matsui’s 2019 exhibition “HOLY VISITOR” held at NO.12 Gallery in Tokyo, Japan - with the titular track composed for this special new release.

The approach to ‘traces of the ceiling’ is that of a diary - shared between Takako’s intimate musical pieces culled from daily experiences, documented between October and December 2018 (with a single piece recorded in August 2020) - alongside pieces of original silkscreened and risograph printed artwork by Ippei, each with their own unique qualities for the viewer to connect with as an intimate snapshot of the creative process as well as a beautiful intricate momentary work to cherish. Weber (of Austrian Nový Svět); and Léo Maury (of French Niedowierzanie). It seems I’m not the only one who sees this lineup as the perfect fit – a true supergroup for the band. Alongside their voices and compositions, each member brings a distinct instrumental signature to the album: Weber contributes, in addition to voice & lyrics, accordion, modular synth textures, harmonica, and electronics; Maury provides cello, bass, setar, analogue synth work, and brass/woodwind colors; while Dither Craf shapes the core with keyboards, guitars, percussion, and programming, and a guest appearance by Vinz Aquarian adds Kaoss Pad on “Never Really Anywhere.”

The manic-stoic play of diverse instruments that defines Niedowierzanie's unique aesthetic blends effortlessly with Mushroom’s Patience’s approach, especially notable since their first collaboration on Jellyfish in 2014. Since the completion of the Element-Tilogy with Water (2005), For the first time in 20 years, J. Weber returns to lend his unmistakable voice in two languages — German and English – a vocal presence that was set aside 20 years ago and has been missed ever since. To describe the spirit of the project that Dither Craf has been shaping since the ’80s, one would have to get poetic.

Mushroom’s Patience has always pursued the musical precision of an ambivalent feeling – one that refuses strict definition because even the person experiencing it cannot fully locate it. There’s a distinctive approach to pain, sadness, and their absurdities, often dismissed as “humorous” – a theatrical expression, stumbling with slapstick-like desperation, which some might interpret as an Italian attribute. Dither Craf has frequently played with imagery like headless chickens, freak-show aesthetics, and band photos featuring arms made of bananas. But looking deeper, you realize that these expressions are more than just black humor or references to artistic movements; the sting goes much deeper, revealing an intricate, layered meaning beneath the surface. Some songs operate on entirely different perceptual levels, with dreamlike images that shift from haunting unease to close, meditative observation. Towering buildings against fiery red sunsets turn into black stripes in the sight, and the world is reimagined: melancholy becomes music, rendered in exaggerated, monstrous forms. Even under sedation, the muscle still twitches, ready to strike.

With La Nueva Normalidad, this intensity gains a new precision, both musically and lyrically. As a reviewer, it’s tricky to classify the music into genres or to compare it to other bands, so I won’t. Yet it’s impossible not to notice the album’s echoes of the ’70s and ’80s – with Dither Craf’s bass lines, glimmering guitar splashes, sharp beats, and the almost soulful, octave-jumping howls of Weber’s instinctive, impulsive vocal surges in some songs. These are images of shiny shoes, shoulder pads, and disco balls flashing briefly, only to vanish in the acid-warped mirror of Mushroom’s Patience's signature sound: an unsettling mix of broken post-industrial and psychotropic-mutated folklore that flickers always just out of focus.

Not only through the front-cover painting – civilization-integrated, normalized monsters rendered in naive-expressionist style by Dither Craf himself – but also through the album’s title, lyrics, and track names, the band adopts a notably political tone. Yet it’s not as simple as it might appear. While La Nueva Normalidad addresses the rise of monstrous forces – malignant double standards, mind-numbing dogmas, and egocentrism disguised as social norms that deceive and confuse – it is far from a straightforward social critique. Instead, the criticism takes shape through shifting, dazzling contradictions that inevitably turn inward. In all the lyrics, it is ultimately about personal failures, uncertainties (as in “König”), the weight of old wounds and abandoned dreams, and the compulsions that manipulate our actions and judgments, as in “Dolores y Soledad” and “Darklands.” Then the album confronts the most destructive parts of ourselves, as in “New Dawn–Old Scum.” This self-reflection is severe and cautionary, yet it always places a steady hand on the cheek, guiding us through the dark valley of modern times.

(Quirlschlängle, November 2025)

Tracklist
A1 Il Mondo Nuovo
A2 Dolores Y Soledad
A3 Darklands
A4 New Dawn-Old Scum
A5 Never Really Anywhere
B1 Seven Trumpets Of The Apocalypse
B2 These Days
B3 König
B4 Schnee
B5 Golden
B6 Sotano Second Schnitt

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0020/7755/6791/files/IMG_78592_87e9bcfe-e106-4c8f-91da-7ee6657eeea0.jpg?v=1766409579
anne-gillis-eyry-1
Anne Gillis – Eyry]

Label: Art Into Life – AiL 038
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: Japan
Released: 8 Nov 2025
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient, Experimental

NEW ANNE GILLIS ! Much more soon. (Mint / New)

Tracklist
A1 Round & Round & Round
A2 Isccahya
A3 La Piscine Qui Vient Du Ciel
A4 Arhé
A5 L'amour Sous Silence
B1 J'ai Oublié
B2 Itreath
B3 Haoussha
B4 Aimah
B5 Quelqu'un A L'heure ?

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0020/7755/6791/files/IMG_78572_573054f3-a36d-465d-a6b3-ff13a7093111.jpg?v=1766409829
上野耕路-koji-ueno-okinawan-childai-オキナワン-チルダイ-2
上野耕路 / Koji Ueno – Okinawan Childai / オキナワン・チルダイ

Label: Flowmango – FLMG-001
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue
Country: Japan
Released: 19 Feb 2025
Genre: Electronic, Stage & Screen
Style: Modern Classical, Soundtrack

Stunning traditional Okinawan standards sized down into chamber music miniatures recalling Pascal Comelade, Steve Reich +++. Fantastic!!!
