If the collected names above feel like a bit too much heavy metal thunder fear not.  There is weight and power here, but it’s in the spaces between, as much what is stated as what isn’t.

The record starts with a polite round of applause, suggesting the presence of an audience, but as soon as the ringing walk-between-the-raindrops guitar begins the world drops away. And once Ai Aso begins to sing she sounds like the only voice in existence. It might be worth suggesting a kinship in sound and feel to Eddie Corman or Saya Ueno, but comparisons are by the by in the presence of a voice this pure and this deftly placed. After a few songs the guitar gives way to an icy organ that pulses under and around the voice, taking us further from a recognisable singer songwriter mode toward a deeper, more mysterious post-industrial zone. Then the guitar returns, and lighter and softer than before, and before we know it we are back in the room and the polite applause brings the everyday world in again. (Mint / New)
