Wowowwow….. Totemic Detroit double pack from Sherard Ingram’s (aka DJ Stingray) Urban Tribe project, released on Mo Wax in 1998, misunderstood at the time of release and even now seemingly under-appreciated.  Ingram drafts in an all star cast from across the city to form something of a Detroit Megatron - Moodymann, Shake and Carl Craig (yes really!), who all smear their prints across the 16 track collection.  The mood is open-ended and elegiac throughout, carried through by syrupy breakbeats that aren’t quite techno, nor hip-hop - but unmistakably Detroit, with fizzing syncopations draped in shimmering sheets of synthesiser texture.  Moodymann’s low-slung g-funk influence bubbles to the top of the LPs most upbeat moment ‘D-2000’, whereas elsewhere pieces like ‘Cultural Nimrod’ predate DMZ’s or Skull Disco’s brand of dark, ominous dubstep by a good 5/6 years.  It takes a few trips around to realise it, but definitely one that should be held at the top of the pile.. with artwork by none other than Will Bankhead.  Highest recommend! (VG+++ / VG+ - clean copy, some slight noise in quite parts)
